Rasa Shastra divides alchemical materials into a number of categories, first and foremost being Parada (mercury). This liquid metal is considered the master metal, elevated above all materials. Rasa medicines containing mercury have their strength increased tenfold. Mercury is stabilised by combining with sulphur. The categories of Rasa Shastra are: Maha Rasa, containing eight materials such as mica and iron pyrite. Uparasa, contains eight materials such as orpiment and realgar. Sadharana Rasa contains eight materials including arsenic and lead oxide. Dhatu contains nine metals such as iron and copper. Ratna contains nine gems, such as diamond and sapphire. Uparatna contains eight semiprecious gemstones such as sunstone and tourmaline.  With informative texts and 1000’s of colour slides, Rasa Shastra The Art of Vedic Alchemy Volumes 1 – 4 takes the viewer on an amazing journey through the preparation of over sixty types of Rasa base materials, using techniques which are still used to prepare many ingredients used in popular Ayurvedic formulas.
